Internet Software Review - old entries
  • AUDIOLINK - plays audion realtime with totally fantastic quality. Though there is a catch - only authors have access to encoder, and therefore song selection is limited to few japanese ones.

(Sometime in 96) It's been almost 6 months since player got stuck on the alpha version. Links to the songs stopped working. Looks like AudioLink was not meant to be.

05/30/97 Yep, their site became 404. Too bad.

  • DOSLYNX - a dynosaurus, written in pre-Winsock times. Can be use to let DOS-based LAN users read your HTML page.

12 June 1997. You are probably thinking that nothing interesting is taking place on the DOS front ? Wrong! Ever since free OpenDOS system came out DOS web browsers started to appear, including graphical ones.

  • FINGERPLAN - for people with dynamic IP, runs when connection is established and puts current IP to Unix in .plan file. I used it to make link to my FTP site. This util expires every 2 weeks, so I ended up writing my own program to do the same thing.

    5 June 1997 Next Generation - I discovered OLINE.

  • FREEWAY FTP SERVER - Looks cute, but refuses to work with browsers.

  • FTPSERVU- another demon. If you allow anonymous access, it will let user access your entire disk. So be careful.

  • HTMLDRV - not a bad idea - allows to print from any windows program to HTML driver. Yet implementation is dismal.
  • Vermillion FTP server - new thingie, I tried it instead of WSFTPD. First impression - what a colossus!
Second impression - unregistered version allows only 1 user and 15 minutes connection time. Recycle bin it is.

  • VRML - (1996) Sometimes I think that entire talk about VRML - is a giant conspiracy to pull my leg. I tried a binch of VRML viewers and none of them worked. The most interesting i saw from them - is General Protection Fault.

(1997) Well, I got it working, but boy, is it SLOW!

One guy from InfoWorld said about all this:
"VRML - Boldly going where no one needs to go".

  • WEBPHONE - Looks pretty, but behind that prettiness lies the most confusing interface on this side of the Big Dipper.
